In short: the fastest way to learn to speak Spanish is to talk regularly with a native speaker who structures the conversation: one topic per lesson, you do most of the talking, targeted correction, and repetition in the next lesson. Online works just as well as in person, with no commute and at times that fit your calendar. Around A2 is ideal. Below that, conversation needs more guidance, but it's still possible.

I'm Santiago Garnica, a Spanish tutor from Bogotá and a lawyer (Universidad del Rosario). I've been teaching Colombian Spanish one-to-one for more than three years, with explanations in German (B2) or English (C1) when you need them. My students rate the lessons 5.0 ★ (8 reviews). In this guide I'll show you how online conversation practice should be structured, what the alternatives are, and how to get past the fear of speaking.

Why you understand a lot but say little

Many German speakers know the feeling: you can read a Spanish article and follow half a podcast, but when someone asks you something, your mind goes blank. That isn't a lack of talent. Understanding and speaking are two different skills. You train understanding with input and speaking only with output.

School, group courses and apps short-change output. You listen, read and tap answers, but you rarely build your own sentences under time pressure. On top of that, many learners from Germany, Austria and Switzerland set high standards for themselves: better to say nothing than something wrong. That's exactly what holds them back.

Practising Spanish speaking: the options compared

There are several ways to practise Spanish online. Each has its place:

OptionStrengthsWeaknesses
Tandem partnerFree, real conversations, cultureHalf the time you speak German; your partner isn't a teacher and rarely corrects systematically
AI chat and speaking appsAvailable 24/7, cheap, no pressureNo real human reaction; correction and pronunciation feedback vary; no plan over weeks
Group conversation course (e.g. adult education centre)Fixed times, social, affordableSeveral participants share the speaking time; topics and pace don't always fit you
One-to-one online with a native speakerMaximum speaking time, topics based on your goal, corrections followed over weeksCosts more per hour than an app or a tandem

The best solution is often a mix: apps or AI for daily habit, a tandem for culture, and one-to-one lessons for structured progress. When a tutor is worth it compared with apps is covered in Private Spanish Tutor vs Language Apps.

What makes structured conversation different from small talk

Just chatting helps at the start. After a few weeks, though, you repeat the same sentences and the same mistakes. Structured conversation has five features:

  1. A topic with a goal. Not "let's just talk", but for example: "You explain your current project and respond to three critical questions."
  2. You do most of the talking. The tutor asks, follows up and holds back.
  3. Targeted correction. Not every mistake, but the two or three that block understanding or keep coming back.
  4. Repetition. What was corrected today comes back next week until it sticks.
  5. Rising difficulty. From describing to storytelling, from storytelling to arguing a point.

How a conversation lesson can be structured

A paid lesson with me lasts 50 minutes. One possible structure:

MinutesWhat happensGoal
0–5Warm-up: how was your week?Switch into Spanish
5–12Introduce the topic, five to eight key wordsMaterial for the conversation
12–38Conversation, role play or storytelling, with follow-up questionsFree speaking in real conditions
38–46The three most important corrections, each said again out loudFix mistakes on the spot
46–50A task until next timeRepetition in daily life

If a rule blocks you, such as ser and estar or the past tenses, I explain it briefly in German or English and we go straight back into Spanish. The bridge is short; speaking stays the main thing.

Topics that work well for German speakers

  • Work: your job, a project, a problem in the team. Ideal if you work with Latin America (see also Business Spanish Lessons).
  • Travel: plans, experiences, mishaps. You practise the past tenses naturally.
  • Comparisons: how is it in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, and how in Colombia? Punctuality, food, work culture.
  • News and opinions: a short article as a starting point, then your opinion with reasons.
  • Role plays: doctor's visit, flat hunting, a complaint, a negotiation.

Phrases that buy you time in a conversation

Native speakers don't talk in perfect sentences. They use fillers and questions to gain time. These phrases help immediately:

SpanishEnglishWhen
Déjame pensar…Let me think…When you need a moment
¿Cómo se dice … en español?How do you say … in Spanish? When a word is missing
¿Me repites, por favor?Could you repeat that? When it was too fast
¿Cómo así?What do you mean? (Colombia)When you want to dig deeper
O sea…I mean… / in other words…To rephrase
Lo que quiero decir es que…What I mean is…To start again
Qué pena, no entendí.Sorry, I didn't get that. (Colombia)To ask politely
¡De una!Sure, right away! (Colombia)To say yes

Learn these eight by heart. They keep the conversation going even when a word is missing.

Getting past the fear of speaking: tips for perfectionists

  • The 70 per cent rule: speak when you're 70 per cent sure. Correction supplies the other 30.
  • Mistakes are data: every mistake shows what to work on next. Without mistakes there's no plan.
  • Prepared sentences: prepare three sentences on the lesson topic. Getting started becomes easier.
  • Voice notes: record 60 seconds of Spanish between lessons. It's speaking without an audience.
  • Paraphrase instead of going silent: if you don't know el destornillador (screwdriver), say la herramienta para los tornillos. That's a skill, not a weakness.

Online or in person?

For conversation, online lessons have three advantages. You skip the commute and can practise even on busy workdays. You can speak with a native speaker from Latin America instead of whoever happens to live in your city. And you can schedule flexibly, including evenings on Central European time. Technically, all you need is a laptop or tablet, a headset with a microphone and a stable internet connection.

How to recognise a good conversation lesson

Whoever you learn with, you can check these four points yourself after the first few lessons:

  • Talk time: you spoke much more than your tutor.
  • Concrete corrections: after the lesson you can name two or three mistakes you now say differently.
  • A common thread: topics build on each other instead of starting from zero every week.
  • Your goal in view: vocabulary and situations fit your life, not a random textbook chapter.

If two of these are missing, it's chatting rather than training.

How often should you practise?

Twice a week is a good load for most working adults. It leaves enough time between lessons to review, but not so much that you forget. Once a week maintains your level but moves you forward more slowly. How that affects the time to A2, B1 or B2 is worked out in How Long Does It Take to Learn Spanish?.

FAQ

How can I practise speaking Spanish online?

Most effectively with regular one-to-one lessons with a native speaker who structures the conversation and corrects you in a targeted way. Tandem partners, AI chats and voice notes to yourself help as extras.

From which level is conversation practice worth it?

From around A2 you can hold free conversations. At A1, conversation is possible too, but needs more guidance from the tutor, with simple questions and prepared sentences.

Can I practise speaking Spanish with AI?

Yes, as a supplement. AI is always available and takes the pressure off. What's missing are real human reactions, reliable pronunciation feedback and a tutor who tracks your mistakes over weeks.

Tandem or tutor: which is better?

A tandem is free and good for culture and motivation. But your partner isn't a teacher, and half the time you speak German. For fast, structured progress a tutor is more effective. Many people combine both.

What does Spanish conversation with a native speaker cost with you?

A 50-minute lesson costs $20. Packs: 5 lessons $85, 10 lessons $160, 20 lessons $300. The first trial class (25 minutes) is free.

What do I need technically for online lessons?

A laptop or tablet, a headset with a microphone and a stable internet connection. You receive the meeting link with your booking.
