Short answer: The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the official Spanish diploma awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education. It exists from A1 to C2 and never expires. It tests reading, listening, writing and speaking, and for most levels you have to pass two groups of tasks separately. Good DELE preparation therefore means practising all four skills under time pressure, not just grammar.

I'm Santiago Garnica, a Spanish tutor from Bogotá and a lawyer (Universidad del Rosario). I'm not an official DELE examiner and I don't promise a grade. What I do in 1:1 lessons with German speakers is work on where most points are lost: speaking freely, writing well-structured texts and getting rid of typical German mistakes. This guide explains the exam structure, how to choose your level and what a realistic prep plan looks like. Always check current dates and fees on the official Instituto Cervantes site or with your exam centre, because they vary by centre and level.

What is the DELE and why take it?

The DELE is an internationally recognised certificate of your Spanish level according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Typical reasons adults in Germany, Austria and Switzerland take it:

  • Work: official proof for applications, transfers or roles with Spanish-speaking markets.
  • Study: some universities in Spain or Latin America require proof of Spanish.
  • Official procedures: Spanish citizenship applications often require at least DELE A2. Check with the relevant authorities whether that applies to you.
  • Motivation: a fixed date to work towards. For many people, that's the most important reason.

A big plus: the diploma has no expiry date. Once you pass, it's valid for life.

Which level? A1 to C2 at a glance

LevelRoughly what you can doTypical for
A1simple sentences about yourself, daily lifefirst step, first certificate
A2everyday situations, short conversationsofficial procedures, foundations
B1travel, work, giving reasons for opinionsthe most common goal for professionals
B2fluent conversation, arguing, specialist textsstudy, jobs using Spanish
C1complex texts, precise expressionuniversity, demanding jobs
C2near-native controlteachers, translators

Choose the level you'll pass with confidence, not the one you wish you had. If you narrowly fail a DELE B2, you get no certificate at all, not even B1. A solid B1 is worth more than a missed B2.

How long the road to B1 or B2 roughly takes is covered in How Long Does It Take a German Speaker to Learn Spanish?.

How the exam is structured

From A1 to C1, the DELE has four parts:

  1. Comprensión de lectura (reading)
  2. Comprensión auditiva (listening)
  3. Expresión e interacción escritas (writing)
  4. Expresión e interacción orales (speaking)

The parts are grouped in two: reading and writing form one group, listening and speaking the other. You must reach the minimum score in each group separately. So excellent reading won't make up for weak listening if they sit in different groups. C2 is structured differently, with combined tasks. The exact pass marks per level are in the official Instituto Cervantes exam description.

For the speaking exam you get preparation time and then talk with an examiner who assesses you. That's the part many German speakers worry about most.

Where German speakers lose points

From my lessons, these are the main spots:

  • Speaking answers too short. Many people answer correctly, but in two sentences. The exam assesses whether you can develop a topic: opinion, example, reason, counterpoint.
  • Past tenses. The German Perfekt leads to He ido instead of Fui, and the line between preterite and imperfect stays shaky. In writing tasks where you narrate an experience, that costs points. More in Preterite vs Imperfect.
  • Avoiding the subjunctive. From B1 on, tasks expect wishes, recommendations and opinions. If you dodge the subjunctive, your writing is simpler than the level requires. The most common triggers are in Spanish Subjunctive for German Speakers.
  • Ser and estar, gender, pronouns. Small mistakes, but they add up. An overview is in Common Spanish Mistakes German Speakers Make.
  • Register in letters. Many writing tasks are emails or letters. Switching between tú and usted costs points on coherence.
  • Time. If you've never practised against the clock, you won't finish the reading and listening tasks.

Latin American Spanish in the DELE: allowed?

Yes. The DELE recognises the different varieties of Spanish. You can take the exam using Latin American Spanish, for example ustedes instead of vosotros and an s sound instead of the Spain th. What matters is staying consistent within one variety. The listening texts also include different accents, so it pays to listen to more than one kind of Spanish. More in Latin American vs Spain Spanish.

A realistic preparation plan

This structure works if you're already close to your target level and are preparing for the exam itself. If the gap is bigger, you need more general lessons first.

Phase 1: Baseline (1–2 weeks)

  • Take an official sample exam (the Instituto Cervantes publishes model papers) under real time limits.
  • Note where you lose points in each part.

Phase 2: Close the gaps (4–8 weeks)

  • Grammar targeted at your own mistakes, not textbook chapters.
  • Vocabulary by exam topic: work, housing, health, environment, leisure, education.
  • 15 minutes of listening a day, with different accents.

Phase 3: Exam training (3–4 weeks)

  • One writing task per week with correction, to word count and time.
  • Speaking tasks out loud, with a timer: prepare, speak, get feedback.
  • At least one complete sample exam in one sitting at the end.

With two 50-minute lessons a week plus your own practice, that's a rhythm many working adults can keep.

What 1:1 lessons help with most

You can work through most reading and listening material on your own. The productive parts are harder alone:

  • Speaking simulation: I play the examiner, ask follow-up questions and then give concrete feedback on structure, vocabulary and mistakes.
  • Writing correction: you write a task, I correct it, and we talk about the mistakes that keep coming back.
  • Explanations in German: when a rule blocks you, I explain it in German so no time is lost.

I prepare you for the skills the DELE tests. Registration, dates and official rules go through the Instituto Cervantes and the exam centres.

FAQ

How long is the DELE valid?

The DELE diploma has no expiry date. It's valid indefinitely.

Which DELE level should I choose?

The level you already almost certainly pass in a timed sample exam. If you fail a level, you don't get a certificate for the level below.

Can I take the DELE with Latin American Spanish?

Yes. The DELE recognises the different varieties of Spanish. What matters is staying consistent within one variety.

How is the DELE B1 structured?

Like levels A1 to C1, it has four parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking. Reading and writing form one group, listening and speaking the other, and you must pass both groups separately.

What's the difference between DELE and SIELE?

Both come from the Instituto Cervantes. The DELE is a level-specific exam and never expires. The SIELE is taken on a computer, places you on a scale and has a limited validity period. Check the official sites for current details.

Free trial class: where do you stand before the DELE?

Before you register, it's worth taking an honest look at your speaking and writing. In the free 25-minute trial class on garnica.co we do a short DELE-style speaking task, and you get an assessment of which level is realistic and what to work on. Everything about lessons and packs is on the home page.
